my pearls from the psalms

One Psalm ~ One Verse

The book of Psalms is a treasure book for life. Like any treasure, its riches must be discovered—by those willing to seek and search its depths through prayerful reading. On each page of this devotional is a “pearl” I discovered for myself from a particular psalm. Using the original King James Version, I have chosen only one verse—a single pearl—from each psalm. For context, I may include an additional verse or two, but the focus remains on the one chosen verse.

Some psalms offer their gems quickly. Others require more time and quiet reflection, especially those that span many verses—from Psalm 117’s brief 2 verses to Psalm 119’s extended 176. But each one, I believe, holds something precious.

Before reading each psalm, I begin with a simple prayer:
“Lord, open Your Word to me, and open me to Your Word.”

It is my hope that what you read here will not only bless you but stir your own search for the treasures waiting within the Psalms.

Letting the Word

“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14)

These words take me back to a song from my youth group days in the 1970s:

“Don’t you wonder why the stars are in the sky?

They are telling you and I of the glory of God.

Every towering tree is there for folks to see,

So there no doubt can be the glory of God.

So let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart

Do the same thing for Thee,

And a witness be, to the glory of God.”

Even now, that simple chorus echoes the heart of this psalm—creation itself declaring God’s majesty. The heavens, the stars, the trees… all of them silently proclaim His glory without speaking a single word. And in response, David prays that our words and our thoughts would do the same.

This psalm invites us into something deeper than lip service. It calls us to live thoughtfully, intentionally aligning our speech, our inner reflections, and our outward lives with the God we love. The God who strengthens us. The God who redeems us. The God whose glory fills the heavens and, by His grace, can also shine through us.

Prayer:

Lord, may my words and my thoughts today be pleasing in Your sight. Shape my heart to reflect Your glory, guide my speech to honor You, and let my life quietly but faithfully bear witness to Your greatness. Amen.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
