The book of Psalms is a treasure book for life. Like any treasure, its riches must be discovered—by those willing to seek and search its depths through prayerful reading. On each page of this devotional is a “pearl” I discovered for myself from a particular psalm. Using the original King James Version, I have chosen only one verse—a single pearl—from each psalm. For context, I may include an additional verse or two, but the focus remains on the one chosen verse.
Some psalms offer their gems quickly. Others require more time and quiet reflection, especially those that span many verses—from Psalm 117’s brief 2 verses to Psalm 119’s extended 176. But each one, I believe, holds something precious.
Before reading each psalm, I begin with a simple prayer:
“Lord, open Your Word to me, and open me to Your Word.”
It is my hope that what you read here will not only bless you but stir your own search for the treasures waiting within the Psalms.
Let the Word and the Meditation of my heart...
Psalm 22:19 (KJV)
“But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me.”
This Psalm carries us to the cross.
These are not just David’s words—they echo the suffering of Jesus, who would bear the weight of our sin and cry out in deep anguish. In the midst of pain, abandonment, and unimaginable suffering, there is still this plea: “Be not far from me… O my strength.”
Even in suffering, there is dependence.
Even in agony, there is trust.
Jesus shows us that when the weight is too great, the right response is not self-reliance—but calling on the Father.
I may never face a cross like Christ did, but I will face moments where I feel overwhelmed, helpless, and in need of strength beyond my own. In those moments, this verse becomes my prayer.
“Lord, don’t be far from me. Be near. Be my strength. Come quickly to help me.”
And He does.
Prayer:
Lord, in moments when I feel weak, overwhelmed, or alone, remind me that You are near. You are my strength. You are my help. Teach me to call on You quickly and trust You fully. Thank You for the example of Jesus, who showed me how to depend on You even in suffering. Be near to me today, O Lord, my strength. Amen.
